The Story of the Quaking Aspen Tree.
The quaking aspen, also know as the trembling aspen, golden aspen, mountain aspen, and in Spanish...alamo blanco, is the basis for all of our pieces, of which we use only dead standing trees. The aspen grows naturally and well above 7,000 feet, and is perhaps the highlight of any visit to the Rocky Mountain region. An interesting fact about the aspen is that entire groves are all clones of one another and connected by an interweaving system of roots...making the trees very susceptible to disease or infestation. These terminal viruses and insects cause the breathtaking color and character of the pieces that you see.
How Original Aspen Art Began.
Since 1970, when Don Noble, first picked up a chisel and began working on a wood lathe, these pieces of Original Aspen have been under constant development and improvement.
The slow evolution of this art has come from a basis of American craftsmanship and has yielded a flawed, yet perfect product, that represents nature's blemished excellence. The secret to these functional creations' shine is nearly two weeks of applying coat after coat of a protective finish, which guarantees a product lifetime of many generations.
Our company is also dedicated to preserving our natural forests by clearing only dead standing aspen, which is a wild fire hazard. This also clears the ground for new growth, which is the future of our wilderness. This is very important to the artists, considering that three generations are currently employed, and that all of the artists are true Coloradans. The articulate process has been passed from father to son, just as other trades have been passed through the generations in the tradition of the apprenticeship system of the Old World.
